Marinas that hold when the bura blows
The bura blows hardest in Kvarner, funnelled down off the Velebit and Učka. These marinas are recorded protected from the northeast — the bearing it actually comes from.
This guide is written for a north-easterly.
Kvarner takes the worst of the bura on this coast, the wind dropping off the mainland mountains and accelerating through the channels between Krk, Cres and Rab. An anchorage can drag in that kind of gusting; a marina berth, in one that is actually built to face it, does not. Every stop below is recorded protected from the northeast.
Why a marina here, not an anchorage
A bura event is not a sea-breeze afternoon — it can run for a day or more at gale force with squalls well above the sustained speed. These marinas sit in the lee of the terrain that channels the wind rather than facing straight into it.
- A northeast-protected berth is not automatically protected from every other direction — check the whole exposure card for the crossing you actually sailed.
